SEMA Preview: Toyota’s Vegas-bound Venzas

When you think about the Toyota Venza, we doubt the first thing that comes to mind is customization. But that hasn’t stopped Toyota from tapping Street Image, Inc. and long-time partner Five Axis to create a duo of Venza project cars for November’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

The two low-slung crossovers (don’t call them wagons) attempt to highlight and accentuate the active lifestyles of the Venza’s core demographic, beginning with the Street Image variant (above) that boasts an upgraded engine and brakes, massive rollers, a lowered ride height, body kit, a black/burgundy interior and a sat-nav-equipped entertainment system. Toyota says the Street Image SportLux version attempts “to give the occupants the feel of a refined sports car while retaining the Venza’s utility and functionality.” We say, good luck.

Five Axis makes a slightly more compelling case for customizing the Venza with a stow-away rack system created by Magna Car Top Systems that can transport everything from bicycles to skis. New front and rear bumpers, wider fenders and pot-hole averse 20×10.5-inch wheels round out the exterior mods on the Venza AS V.

We’ll be checking out both models in Vegas in a few weeks, but check the gallery below now for a preview.

Singapore GP race progress analysis

September 30th, 2008 at 08:00am Under Racing

Ferrari were looking good for a one-two finish until this happened

Ferrari were looking good for a one-two finish until this happened

I’ve produced a chart showing the position of each driver on every lap of the Singapore Grand Prix, compared to the race leader.

Here’s an analysis of some of the key points in the race base on the chart.

Singapore Grand Prix race progress chart

A few things stand out on the chart:

  • How tightly bunched the field was behind Jarno Trulli at the start of the race. Trulli had a heavy fuel load on board but the cars immediately behind him - Nico Rosberg, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso - were fuelled shorter.
  • On lap 17 the three dots at the 70s mark are the three cars that benefited most from the first safety car period: Fernando Alonso, who had already pitted, and the Red Bull duo, whose quick-thinking pit team got them into the pits before they were closed.
  • Felipe Massa is the big spike on lap 18.
  • After the restart Giancarlo Fisichella played he role Trulli had before of backing the pack up. He was able to keep the faster cars behind him because he only had 10-11 laps of fuel left after the safety car period while his pursuers had all recently pitted.
  • The length of time it took to get Nico Rosberg in for his penalty meant, because of Fisichella, Rosberg only lost track position to Alonso.
  • Looking at David Coulthard, Nick Heidfeld and Sebastian Vettel’s lines, it seems Coulthard would have been fifth if he hadn’t been delayed in his second pit stop.

Singapore Grand Prix race progress chart - leaders

Here’s the same chart but zoomed in to show only cars within 20 seconds of the leader at any time:

It’s clear from looking at this chart Ferrari had a good chance of scoring a one-two before the first safety car period, unless Hamilton was very heavy with fuel.

SC rule solution on the horizon?

September 30th, 2008 at 08:00am Under Racing

SC
After Robert Kubica and Nico Rosberg endured penalties at the Grand Prix of Singapore there have been further calls for a change to the current SC rule that closes the pits and penalizes anyone for taking on fuel during the SC period until the pit lane is officially opened. This was to prevent cars racing back to the pits and potential being dangerous. This has also left many outraged at the penalties incurred by drivers who have no choice but to pit for fuel as they are running on fumes. It seems a solution is in the works however.

Singapore also saw continued testing of a new software system designed to solve this SC rule issue and looks to be deployed for 2009. It is a system that gives and audible warning to the driver if he goes over a certain speed deemed safe to return to the pit after the Safety Car is deployed. Autosport reports:

McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh said teams had already discussed the matter in Singapore and he felt the events of the race would be a catalyst to ensure change is made.

“It will happen I am sure by the start of next year,” he said. “For people to change now they have to accept they got it hopelessly wrong, and it has to change during the winter. Everyone knows it has to change and I am very confident that it will.”

The latest version of the safety car software in the cars provides drivers with an audible warning if they go above a predetermined speed through the sector where an incident has taken place.

Tests of the system are likely to continue for the remainder of the season before a full implementation at the start of 2009.
