Morris Chang, the chairman and CEO said the decrease of 40nm [...]

PS3 Media Server 1.10.5 Review

October 30th, 2009 at 06:56pm Under Computers

PS3 Media Server is, as its name suggests, a multimedia server that is designed to interface with the PlayStation 3 gaming console. You install it on a computer that is on the same network with the PS3 and, thanks to the Digital Living Network Alliance-compliant Universal Plug and Play support in both the console and the server, a connection will be created between the two, without any intervention required (except having correct network settings, of course).

But what’s a connection useful for by itself? As its name suggests, PS3 Media Server is designed to transcode videos and stream them in real time, enabling you to watch media residing on the server on the display that your console is connected to. However, if the files that you want to view aren’t in one of the formats that the PlayStation understands, you will need a pretty beefy computer to do the transcoding, especially if you want it to happen in real time. Our first impression was that trying to exploit a Java application for real-time streaming would be impossible because of the memory limitations that the JVM imposes, but in fact all the heavy lifting is done by one of the backends that are selected in the PS3 Media Server’s configuration options, like the well-known open-source MEncoder and FFmpeg applications.

Unfortunately, PS3 Media Server’s interface is laid out … (read more)

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

October 30th, 2009 at 06:56pm Under Computers

It’s not a pretty game. It’s not about a hero and it’s not about glory. The concept of Dragon Rising is a breath of fresh air, as it steps away from the cinematic depiction of war that games have started to portray exclusively and throws you in the middle of combat as a soldier should be, on a need to know basis. The game is one of the closest things out there not to a first-person shooter’s depiction of war but to an actual war simulation. The whole super-soldier factor of unlimited health regeneration doesn’t exist and surviving getting shot is a miracle as long as you don’t dress your wounds and receive medical attention. You’ll soon learn to fear incoming fire and think a hundred times before you decide to open fire.

In the attempt to depict reality, the game stepped away from the classic difficulty level. Enemy’s health and combat abilities don’t change as you scroll through the possible difficulties, and neither do your guns or the world itself. Another thing about the game that makes it stand out is that things don’t seem artificial. Nothing seems out of place, nothings is in a place that it shouldn’t be in. Weapon crates and resupply points are inside military positions, be they friendly or hostile, and there are no abandoned vehicles on the battlefield for you to jack either.

F1 links: Williams to announce Cosworth deal

October 30th, 2009 at 06:55pm Under Racing

Williams to drive back to Cosworth engines (Gulf News)

“Williams boss Sir Frank Williams has sensationally made a double revelation in declaring his Formula One outfit will use British made Cosworth engines next season and that the team will announce its new driver line-up on Monday, a day after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.”

Ecclestone: Donington hopes are over (Autosport)

"There's no Donington. They've missed the deadline which we kept extending for them."

Drivers want clarification on standards (FIA)

Nico Rosberg: "It is Michael Schumacher who started this, like at Spa [in 2000], when Mika Hakkinen tried to overtake him and he ran him off the track. When the guy behind has made a decision [to pass] and the guy in front then moves over, it is very dangerous. You cannot do that."

Abu Dhabi Press Conference (FIA)

"Jarno Trulli: I think we’re going to discuss it probably tomorrow in the drivers’ briefing and in the GPDA briefing. Obviously it was very disappointing to end the race like that, especially on the first lap. Obviously I think I had every reason to be extremely furious. I’ve got all the evidence to show that I was there, I was next to him, so I think tomorrow we are going to discuss it.
Adrian Sutil: I think there’s nothing to discuss. It was a quite obvious incident. In the end it was very disappointing for myself, even more, I think, because I was the one who was just driving and he lost control of his car and crashed in my back, so it was not my problem, it was his problem. I don’t know why he’s freaking out like that, to be honest."

Timo Glock: Neues Team schon nächste Woche (Auto Motor und Sport, German)

German press suggests Timo Glock is heading to Renault to partner Robert Kubica.

Bernie Ecclestone convinced Silverstone can deliver British Grand Prix in long term (The Times)

"Anthony Hamilton, father of Lewis Hamilton, was named yesterday on a management advisory board for a new football “talent management” company, 2mb International Soccer Management. The venture is the brainchild of Mark Blundell, the former Formula One driver, who claims he is going to “shake up” the sport."

Why Silverstone is worth more than gold to Formula One (The Guardian)

"Depending on who you talk to, Ecclestone, on behalf of Formula One, is demanding between £11m and £15m."

The British Grand Prix is still at risk, warns former Formula One world champion Damon Hill (Daily Mail)

"Ecclestone, being Ecclestone, will drive a hard bargain. That is to say he is demanding £12million from Silverstone to stage the event. Silverstone, for their part, do not want to pay such a large fee, especially because the 17-year contract on the table comes with an annual seven per cent escalator."

The future of Adrian Sutil

"The idea of Sutil at Toyota is something of a mystery, particularly if the team could keep Jarno Trulli." Especially so seeing as the pair seem to be at loggerheads.

Q & A with David Coulthard (Autosport)

"You mentally get so used to all the modern tracks getting more and more run off, and then in Abu Dhabi suddenly the run offs are really short because of this Tecpro Barrier. You look at it and think, 'that doesn't look like much run-off'."
