The Formula One Teams’ Association expects to reduce carbon emissions in the sport by 12.4% by 2012.
A FOTA-commissioned report into the environmental impact of Formula found that each team produces an average of 215,558 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Of that, 0.29% comes from the burning of fuel by F1 cars in testing and races.
Over half an F1 teams’ emissions are produced in producing parts and electricity consumption accounts for another 30%.
FOTA chairman and McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said:
The FIA and FOTA are already working together to tailor the 2013 technical regulations to ensuring that all engines and powertrains used in Formula One by that date will showcase, and provide a platform for the ongoing development of, technologies designed to enhance fuel efficiency.

While it’s been a while since I had a chance to be unabashedly enthusiastic about my status as a Kamui Kobayashi fangirl, this past weekend at Valencia the oft-crashing young Sauber driver gave me another go at cheering for driving that requires, as David Hobbs likes to put it, “large…

That’s right. The greening of F1 is here. Here are details:

BMW M5 N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery
With its award-winning V10, BMW’s M division hasn’t left us with much not to love. Save, of course, for the fact that it’s not long for this world, pushed out as it will be in the next M5 by the company’s growing environmental conscience. But before the twin-turbo V8 spells its demise, Nowack Motors is giving it a suitable farewell in the form of the N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition.
Having ruled out forced induction, the BMW tuning house has fitted the 5.0-liter V10 with a pair of new intake air collectors, a remapped ECU and retooled engine components. The result boosts the stock 507-horsepower motor up to a mind-boggling 708, dedicated by Oliver Nowack to his father Hans. The modifications are warrantied for a full year and can be retrofitted to any existing M5, and since the upgrades have been carried out principally on the engine itself, can also be fitted to its two-door counterpart, the M6. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.
